Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development and British Values

SMSC development is promoted through many aspects of school life and is embedded in the Vision and Values of Seamer and Irton CP School. Our curriculum ensures that all pupils have the opportunity to develop an understanding of right and wrong and an appreciation of the Arts in all their forms. We give our pupils opportunities to practise the skills and attitudes required for them to participate fully in a democratic society.

Our SMSC provision helps our pupils to recognise that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law. The school’s ethos and teaching supports the rule of English civil and criminal law and we do not teach anything that undermines it.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development, is the over-arching umbrella that encompasses ‘Personal Development’ across the whole curriculum and the wider world. This includes promoting and experiencing non-academic development in all pupils.

Promote fundamental British values.

The key objectives of our SMSC development:

Spiritual:

Enable pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence in all areas of school life, providing pupils with opportunities to develop their personality and character. We enable pupils to share their thoughts and opinions: pupil voice is important to our school.

Moral:

Encourage respect for other people and democracy. As a school, we support all pupils to enable them to participate in the democratic processes. We highlight the importance of respect and inform pupils about how the law is made and applied in England. This enables pupils to distinguish right from wrong and highlights the importance of the civil and criminal law of England.

Social:

Encourage pupils to accept responsibility for their behaviour in and out of school. We allow opportunities for pupils to show their initiative and resilience through various activities. We help pupils to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society in general.

Cultural

Enable pupils to understand, appreciate and respect their own and different cultural traditions in their locality and the wider world. We enable pupils to become global citizens and reflect on how their actions can impact the wider world. Pupils are also educated on how stereotyping, racism and discrimination can have negative effects on themselves and others.

The Promotion of British Values

Our SMSC development is consistent with the expectation of maintained schools to promote British values to all pupils, developing and demonstrating the skills and attitudes “that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.” Pupils’ understanding of these British values is developed and deepened through our curriculum and extra-curricular provision.
