The Year 1 Curriculum
In Year 1 the children follow the National Curriculum. Please click here to see the coverage of each subject.
For more information on maths, reading, writing and phonics, please click on the links below.
Please click on the topics to see what we will be studying.
The children in Year 1 have 20 spellings to learn during the year. They are known as the 20 Common Exception words as they do not follow any spelling rules (they are tricky to spell!). The children do not have a weekly spelling test. We introduce two new words every week and practise reading and writing them. Every term we check to see how many of the words the children can spell correctly. We will keep you informed on how they are doing and which words they need to practise. Please click on the picture above to access the list and download a copy to keep at home if you would like one.
We introduce the precursive font when writing in Year 1. For an example of how to form the letters plus some useful pencil control sheets and pencil grip posters, please click on the picture above.
If your child has to self-isolate, and they are well enough to continue their learning, please click on the image to the right to download a list of activities for your child to do at home which are linked to the current term's learning.
Please remember to check the Home Learning table above for an overview of the weekly classroom learning.
